Youth Worker Training Day

In order to love and serve students and their families effectively, youth workers need ongoing encouragement, inspiration and equipping.

The Youth Worker Training Day is a one-day training experience for paid and volunteer youth workers designed to provide practical, relevant and biblical insights for your ongoing ministry with adolescents.

Join us on January 31 at Hillcrest Church in Prairie Village, KS for this inspirational day of learning.  The day will start and end with a large group gathering led by Chris Folmsbee of Youthfront, and Jason Gant, Director of Student Ministries at Church of The Resurrection.

The middle of the day will feature breakout sessions where you and your team can engage in meaningful conversations with other youth workers around the following topics:

Break-Out Sessions Include

Changing the Conversation on Short-Term Missions facilitated by Kurt Rietema
  • Maybe it isn't simply about saving others but also being saved from ourselves?  This conversation is about redefining the mission trip as pilgrimage--an intentional interruption in our students' normal patterns of living and thinking in order to subvert the empty stories they are immersed in so that they might awaken to the alternative story of God
Student Leadership and Evangelism facilitated by Jim Newberry
  • Part 1: Re-culturing Student Leadership: Have you been frustrated with the lack of energy in your Student Leadership program?  This session will be a re-imagination of Student Leadership in youth ministry to increase the energy around students becoming contributors toward the mission of God.
  • Part 2: Re-culturing Evangelism:  Are your students effectively sharing Christ with others?  In this session we will explore new thoughts on how youth ministries can equip and energize a holistic approach to student evangelism.
How Can the Gospel become Great Good News for Students facilitated by Mike King
  • For too many people the Good News is not Good News.  The problem is not with the Gospel but with the way we have defined and domesticated the message of Good News.  This session focuses on recovering the biblical narrative of Gospel that is truly the Great Good News -- a Gospel compelling enough that young people will passionately embrace it and live it.
Creating Environments for Spiritual transformation facilitated by Aaron Mitchum and Micah Thomas
  • What does it look like for a youth worker to envision themselves as spiritual environmentalists?  What is a spiritual environmentalist?  Come join the discussion as we explore ways to create environments that encourage spiritual transformation in the lives of students.
Putting Parents Back into the Picture facilitated by Leslie Snyder
  • Most youth ministries would agree that they strongly support the parent's of the teens they serve and support the home as the primary place of spiritual formation.  However, I would like to suggest that many youth ministries and churches unintentionally undermine the God given role of parents which often results in a further distance between teen and parent.  Come join the discussion as we dive into the theology behind the role of the family in spiritual formation and what that can look like in practical everyday youth ministry.
Living Into the Story We Tell facilitated by Kris Walters
  • We are all living into a story.  Is the story you are telling your students big enough to capture their hearts and imaginations.  Many students today are bored with "church" and settling for much less than God intends because they are not being led to live into the epic adventure that is God's Story!  Come join others as together we will explore the power of story.

Please register for the Youth Worker Training Day by January 28, 2009.  A payment of $15 can be made after submitting the registration form below. (this payment is for the cost of the event and the provided lunch)
